Sprayer sprays on its own or will not stop spraying

Applies to:

FGI manual and compression sprayers with a locking shut-off (Universal 181383, Smith 190399, DEWALT, and others).

What causes this:

The sprayer keeps spraying even when you release the handle. Most often the shut-off lock is engaged, holding the valve open. A worn shut-off valve can also keep it from sealing.

• The shut-off lock is engaged
• A worn or dirty shut-off valve

How to fix it:

1. Check the shut-off handle. If the lock is engaged, the sprayer will keep spraying when you release the handle.
2. Squeeze the shut-off handle fully and disengage the lock.
3. Release the handle; the sprayer should stop spraying.
4. If it still will not stop, depressurize and clean the shut-off valve and seat, replacing the rubber disc if worn.
