Sprayer tank is leaking: repair or replace

Applies to:

All FGI sprayers with cracked, split, or leaking tanks (CRAFTSMAN, DEWALT, Smith, HDX, LESCO, Universal, Field King, and others).

What causes this:

A leaking tank usually means the plastic has cracked or split, or a fitting (hose connection, pump base, fill cap) is leaking. The fix depends on where the leak is: a leak from the tank wall cannot be patched safely, while leaks at fittings or seals can usually be fixed with replacement parts.

How to fix it:

1. Empty the tank and rinse out any chemical residue. Never inspect or repair a sprayer that still has chemical in it.
2. Find where the leak is: pour in clean water and check the pump base, hose connection, fill cap, and bottom of the tank.
3. Leak at the hose connection: the hose nut may be loose or the O-ring damaged. Hand-tighten the nut firmly; if it still leaks, replace the O-ring or shut-off assembly.
4. Leak at the pump base: the pump gasket is likely damaged. Remove the pump, clean the gasket and sealing surfaces, and replace the gasket if cracked or swollen.
5. Crack in the tank wall: do NOT patch or glue it. Plastic tank repairs fail under pressure and can spray chemical. The tank or sprayer must be replaced.
6. If the unit is under warranty, file a warranty claim.
7. If it is out of warranty, call 1-800-311-9903 about a replacement tank or sprayer.
